Lineox History
Lineox Inc. is quite a young company, but its founders have a long Linux
history. Raimo
Koski wrote the first Finnish Linux book 1994 with
Esa Tervo. The next important step was
the first Finnish localized Linux distribution by Raimo Koski in
1998. The next year he lead the team who made the first
Swedish Linux distribution.
Tomi Kajala, the other Lineox founder, made his first Linux book translation
in 1999 (Teach Yourself Linux Programming in 24 Hours). The next year he
helped Raimo Koski to make IT Linux 2000.
Stepping Stones
After IT Linux 2000 Lineox founders sort of returned to their roots by
making Linux books with Linux distributions instead of typical boxed set Linux
distributions. In Finland VAT for books is only 8%, while it is 22% for
software and that alone is a good reason to choose book format.
Finland is currently the first country in Linux density according to Linux Counter (Faroe Islands is
self-governing overseas administrative division of Denmark, not an
independent country, Antarctica is governed by multiple countries of
Antarctic Treaty and occasionally there have been also other non-independent
small island groups ahead of Finland. The only independent countries which
have been ahead of Finland occasionally in the past are Island and Norway.).
The popularity of Linux in Finland can be attributed partly to
Finland being the birthplace of Linux, but also to a supply of cheap localized
Linux distributions authored by Lineox founders. The sales figures of Linux
distribution books by Lineox founders in Finland are quite impressive if compared to the
population.
Goals
The business idea behind Lineox is to expand the success in Finland to
world scale. The VAT advantage of books compared to software in Finland is
not unique, it represents approximately an average of the European Union
countries. An other advantage of book format is a lower production cost. A
boxed set Linux distribution costs typically around 20 $/€ more for the
customer just because the card board box is so expensive.
So Lineox is largely about cutting production costs. But the other side is
using innovation to reach the same goal while offering customers more. A
fine example of this is Lineox LIFF, which contains all relevant free Linux
documentation - enough to fill a small bookshelf - in easily searchable
format. With Lineox LIFF, the customer only needs a thin installation
manual, and often not even that, from installing Lineox Enterprise Linux to
utilizing it to its fullest potential.
